I am relatively new to Linda Fairstein. She was recommended by a good friend, my former Manhattan roommate. I just love how Ms. Fairstein is able to present Manhattan landmarks, institutions and general atmosphere so clearly. "Final Jeopardy," I understand, is one of her early novels and it was excellent! Her main character, Alex Cooper, is a full-blown, three dimensional woman!! The supporting characters are also completely believable and well rounded. The plot was intricate, detailed and fast moving. Alex Cooper's dedication to sex crimes has a constant pull through out the novel,. all of her novels. I usually can finish one in a matter of a day - they are that compelling! I highly - very highly - recommend "Final Jeopardy" as an excellent, riveting and educational journey! This was a very interesting read insofar as it held my interest from beginning to end. An obnoxious Hollywood actress asks to use Alex's island house and is murdered as she returns to it one afternoon. The next surprise comes when the dead woman's latest flame seems to be the man that is Alex is dating. Because it is a head shot it is initially believed that the dead woman is Alex herself. Since that could be a possibility suspence is created right up front. The story unfolds against a law enforcement background where there is a major search for a rapist who is preying on women in their NY apartments. I happen to enjoy reading about the law and justice system so found this part of the story almost as fascinating as the hunt for the killer of the actress, which, of course, has many twists and turns before any resolution takes place. Ms. Fairstein, with her personal background, weaves a complex web with seeming ease--all the while keeping you turning pages well into the night.
Most days when you are reading a mystery, you know who the killer is before it's revealed. I was very involved in reading the novel, I had no clue who was going to be the killer. Great mysteries hold your attention until the end and this novel did the very thing. Can't wait for Alex Cooper' book 2.
This is the first time I have read Linda Fairstein, so I'm not going to jump to any conclusions. The story line was interesting; however, I was a little put off by the way she felt it necessary to explain so much of what she stated in quoted dialogue. As a crime story reader, I am familiar with the terminology and don't need explanations for every interact between prosecutor and detective. I believe this is her first book, so will read one more before making any conclusions. The end of the book was a little abrupt, didn't seem to flow with the rest of the story. Maybe the next one will be more to my liking.
This book gives great information on the workings of the New York prosecutors and the law enforcement officials they work with. Alex Cooper, however, is a little more difficult to relate to. Because she is rich and beautiful, I would have found her more appealing if she had struggled a little more, in some aspect of her life.
The plotting, though, is really good and the ancillary characters are well drawn. I will continue to read the books in this series.
My first Linda Fairstein book. She was featured on CBS Sunday Morning 2 weeks ago. The interview made me curious about her books. It was an enjoyable, easy read with an intriguing plot. I'm reading her second book now to get a better idea if I want to continue through her 19 books.
His is my first time reading this author. I recently saw a segment on 60 Minutes featuring Ms. Fairstein. I was intrigued by the fact that her experiences in the Manhattan ADA's office of Sex Crimes was the basis not only of Law & Order Special Victims Unit but for the proliferation of similar units all throughout the US.
The writing is tight; the characters memorable, hard-working, and humorous; and the situations described and the vernacular used are spot on - bringing the story to life. I'm a sucker for a murder mystery/police procedural, and this was a good one. I've already reserved book #2 from the local library.
If you've never read a book by Linda Fairstein -- you're about to get a new addiction and you're very smart to start at the beginning so you don't miss a thing! I envy the journey you're about to take!
This book introduces the reader to Asst. District Attorney Alex Cooper and the team that surrounds her as they tackle the cases presented to the Sex Crimes Unit.
The mystery itself is top rate -- lots of twists, turns and surprises. Fairstein's professional past as a New York district attorney allows her to bring a very realistic grit and detail to every scene and situation.
But beyond the mystery -- you're going to love the cast of characters. One of Fairstein's most notable characters is New York City itself. You'll love the way the city comes to life and whether you're a NYC native or never been there before -- you're going to learn all about the Big Apple.
There are very few authors that I track so I can buy their newest book the day it comes out, but Linda Fairstein is one of them.
