I first read this book more years ago than I want to admit. And I remember thinking at the time that it was one of my favorite books. So I was interested to see what I would think of it now that I'm at a very different place in my life. It still tugs at my heart - it's written in a very plain and simple style, and in the early part of the book, I was thinking, "Well, I was younger then - - " But the farther I got into it, the more I felt that it's the kind of book that creeps up on you, and by the end, I understood why I had liked it so much. It's quite bittersweet in the description of this family's life on this earth, and leaves you musing about what your own life has really meant - not only to you, but to the people that you care about the most. It's still a favorite after all these years.

This story is a pleasant read, with interesting and realistic small town characters. Externally, they may seem to be bland stereotypes, but each person has an inner, secret life. Each is an individual with hopes and dreams, confusions and conflicts, ideals and imperfections, but one thing is constant they care about each other, although they do not always do right by each other.

I found myself caring about these people. While the rural setting might seem mundane, there is nothing mundane about writing that makes you care about the characters, that stimulates a range of emotions, that allows you to see the settings and that offers surprises to the very end.

Moonflowers, also known as Jimson weed or loco weed bloom with huge white trumpet flowers that last last only one night. The moonflower is a good symbol for the fleeting beauty and mystery of life passing too quickly. After the bloom, the seed pods form, huge and prickly. They stick to you, much like this book does.
I first read "The Moonflower Vine" as a teen, 40 years ago, in a "Readers Digest Condensed" volume my grandmother had on the shelf. I found it again as an adult in a second hand bookstore, and find myself re-reading it every couple of years. This time, it's been about 8 years because my hardback copy was mislaid in a move.
Each time I read it, it holds me with its vivid, complex, ever-deepening story, going back and forth in time to draw a portrait of one family's journey and history, their surroundings, and their growth -all shown so clearly that it's almost like watching a film. And each time I come to the end with a smile and a sigh that it's over.
My mother loved this book and handed it down to me many years ago. I've read it a few times over the years and love it so much I felt I needed my own copy! It's an interesting study in human nature and family dynamics, and how things are not always as they seem. I highly recommend this if you enjoy family dramas such as A Thousand Summers by Jane Smiley.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book...could hardly put it down, and hated to see it end. One of the ones that I will remember for a long time...I'm planning on planting a moonflower vine this year just to remind me of it. There are not a lot of books that I find myself stopping to read a phrase over just because it was so beautifully written that I need to savor it. What a shame she didn't write other books...great talent not recognized, apparently. I would have loved to have read more from her. And I probably will read this one again, just to enjoy those lovely descriptive passages.
Though I'd never heard of this "timeless American classic" before, some friends were reading it so I picked it up and read it. I'm glad I did as it deserves every bit of praise, and more.

I tend to prefer plot-driven books with fairly well-drawn characters secondary so, during the first part of the book, I wasn't very happy. The book about a family on a western Missouri farm during the first half of the 20th century is told at a slow pace. I griped that there was no plot but suddenly realized that there was plot and I just hadn't realized it.

The characters--a farmer/schoolteacher and his wife and their daughters--are extremely well drawn. Each section is told from the point of view of one of the characters but the events often don't overlap. The whole family seems quite ordinary but, like any family, there are secrets and there's more going on than appears on the surface.

This is a haunting, unforgettable book. Amazing. It is an American masterpiece from a "one-hit wonder" author.
Short and sweet, and almost impossible to beat. I have read countless books of all types, and have not enjoyed anything more. Someone for the Wall Street Journal wrote that this one of his all time top five books about the Midwest and I can understand why. A really outstanding story about a small town Missouri teacher/farmer, his wife, and their four daughters in the first half of the twentieth century. The only disappointment was that this was the only book the author wrote and published. If that were not the case, I would quickly order another of her works.
I first read this 3 years ago and loved it. Recently wanted to read it again to see how it was put together. Liked it even better and bought copies for 2 of my friends I thought would appreciate it. Had recommended it to 2 others, no feedback yet. It is old-fashioned in every way, certainly NOT cutting edge, but then, that's me as well..
