This book depicts some Southern traditions, a few the peculiar expressions, recipes, and memories of an earlier time, all in a lighthearted glimpse of the South and Southerners. Whether you're from the Deep South or the coastal areas, you'll find yourself nodding and saying, Oh, yes. That's the way it was when I was growing up in the South. It also reflects on what has made the South different in many ways to other areas of the country, and bemoans the fact that the South, as is every area of the country, is becoming homogenized. This is an attempt to record for history some of the South's unique characteristics.

This book is definitely one of the most enjoyable I've read in a long time. The author talks about growing up in a small town in Southern Tennessee and gives us the low-down on that world from a young girl's perspective. But no matter where you happened to be born or grow up, Loretta gives everyone a stark and very enjoyable view into the world of her youth. Even though I'm some 20 years younger than the author, much of what happened in her world I appreciated her talking about as the times changed very little from her childhood to mine. I highly recommend the book to parents and grandparents to first read themselves and then share it with the younger generation. It will surely lead to some very lively discussions.

Most definitely deserving of a 5-star rating. By the way, although she was born a Merrell, she is not kin to me. I've had to also say the same thing about the Merrell shoes I buy from time to time. Nope . . . not kin to them either.

The author is a fantastic storyteller and brings to life what life was like in the South in the middle of the century. You feel like she is having an informal conversation with just you. Also, she was a great Mom )
Loretta really hit the 1950's life in the south. Being a northern girl, myself, I enjoyed reading to both compare and contrast. We are from the same age group. Very humorous, but also very accurate from what my southern friends say. I have loaned the book already!
The book is great!! It brought back so many memories for me. It is a very easy book to read and "get lost in". I felt like I was talking to the author instead of reading a book. The author accurately describes what life was like in a small rural southern town. Today's teens should read it. Maybe it would help them appreciate that they have an indoor bathroom at school instead of an "outhouse". They might also appreciate the drive through window where they order their chicken as opposed to the old fashioned method of chopping the chicken's head off in preparation for Sunday dinner.
Having enjoyed this author's newspaper column for a number of years, I was pleased to learn of the publication of this book. I was not disappointed. It is as delightful as the author. It is a well-written, lighthearted look back at the South a generation (or few) ago. It will prompt memories, provoke laughter (sometimes at ourselves) and cause the reader to want to share it with someone else. I highly recommend it as a good read and as a great gift. Beautiful cover is just icing on the cake.
Thanks to Loretta for a super writing of “Southern Ways and Southern Days”. Loretta says in her book that you can’t go home again, but I disagree. Reading her book took me on a wonderful trip into my early life in Tennessee and Alabama. I tasted the sorghum at my uncle’s mill, smelled the chalkboard at my elementary school, and saw again the lovely flowers my aunt always planted at the edge of the yard where all who passed their home smiled and admired her efforts of beauty. But best of all, remembering again the fond faces of my uncle and aunt and all my cousins brought tears of joy and thankfulness that I had them in my life. Many of Loretta’s stories will become treasured histories of our hometown. I found so interesting the telephone history of our town and the story of how hard her father (my uncle) and all her family worked to better the communication conditions for the community. I remember the old post office where I would be greeted like family when I returned for summer vacation, once being told that I was late in arriving, as the card to my mother said otherwise. I laugh and remind myself to not say anything on a card that I don’t want posted for the world. So many fun things in her book. She took me back to the old Blondie’s beauty shop where I spent many a Christmas eve morning enjoying the festive atmosphere and eating their holiday goodies as I got pretty for our family party. Thanks again Loretta for reminding me of those dear hearts and gentle people. I am waiting to read more of her southern stories.
