I have to confess I bought 'Hexed' for the Ilona Andrews 'Magic Dreams' story which is my favorite of the short stories in the book. One of my favorite characters from their 'Kate Daniels ' shapeshifters series, Dai, the shapeshifting clumsy, vegetarian, nearly blind white tiger, has to pause in her attempts to kill herself racing her souped-up '93 Mustang long enough to save Jim, her sexy panther-shifting boss from an obscure oriental curse, jorogumo--the whore spider. The husband and wife writing team of Ilona Andrews does their usual excellent writing job, wonderful characters readers care about, crisp plotting, and fascinating magic. Highly recommended. The other stories by Yasmine Galenorn, Allyson James, and Jeanne C. Stein are also excellent, but I still like Dai's wry view point in 'Magic Dreams' best.Tags : Hexed [Ilona Andrews, Yasmine Galenorn, Allyson James, Jeanne C. Hexed Ilona Andrews Yasmine Galenorn Allyson James Jeanne C Stein 0971486017601 Books Reviews
Four of the top authors in the urban fantasy genre are brought together in this one anthology. Each story explores havoc wreaking curses in scenarios ranging from a mythical elfin ice land to a dystopian Atlanta teeming with shifters. While each story is an extension of an existing series, they are meant to stand alone. Many readers will recognize The Kate Daniels Series, The Otherworld Series, The Storm Walker Series, and The Anna Strong Series.
The stories may revolve around the same subject but they are as varied and distinct as possible. Beginning with Magic Dreams by Ilona Andrews, a demure but long awaited story that will thrill Kate Daniels fans. Set in Atlanta, GA, the story describes a city that is torn apart by competing forces of magic and technology. Dali, a near sighted vegetarian white tiger shifter is desperately in love with her alpha, Jim, an imposing black panther shifter in charge of pack security. Dali and Jim join forces to save Jim's life after he is cursed by a Japanese demon. The shifters soon discover that the demon seems to be targeting a specific family and search to uncover the meaning beind the tragic and deadly haunting.
Galenorn's story, Ice Shards, follows Lady Iris' journey across worlds and dimensions, as she seeks to expunge the curse that has plagued her since she was exiled from the Northlands monastery she once called home. Raised as the embodiment of a goddess, Iris awakens one day to finds herself lying next to her dead lover and unable to recall the events leading up to this moment. Surrounded by evidence that designates her as the murderer, Iris is denounced by her community and sent to live in exile in the Pacific Northwest for nearly 600 years. But when a new love comes into her life and with him a chance for marriage and a family Iris must go back to the temple to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of her former lover and have the curse lifted. Be prepared for a world of intricate mythologies, mystical powers and exotic creatures written in a language that combines the formality of old English with the quick almost stuttering cadence of modern day American English.
James' entry, Double Hexed, is the sexiest novel of the bunch with Janet, a demi-goddess, and Mick, her dragon-shifter mate, almost constantly in some sexual act. A small assortment of witches, shifters, vampires, nulls and an enchanted mirror struggle to free a hotel and it's inhabitants from a deathly curse that has the plumbing spouting blood and the supes acting crazy.
Stein rounds out the quartet with Blood Debt, an Anna Strong story. Anna is called in to pay back a favor when the brother of a local witch goes missing. Complicating matters, the man has been taken to avenge a crime that Anna unwittingly committed. Now racing against the clock and the devil, Anna must find a way to bring him back alive and clear her name.
I purchased this anthology solely for Ilona Andrews' novella. I really enjoyed how all the novellas stayed on topic. If you are looking for pure entertainment, this anthology is for you.
1) Ilona Andrews - "Magic Dreams"
This novella takes place in the Kate Daniels world.
Fans of the Kate Daniels series, I suggest you be up-to-date on the Kate Daniels series (Magic Bites, Magic Burns, Magic Strikes, Magic Bleeds and Magic Slays) prior to reading this novella, in order to avoid spoilers.
New comers, you can still read this novella and be able to follow along, however, if you are planning on reading the Kate Daniels series, I suggest you do not start here.
Fabulous novella. I have been looking forward to the day we would receive a follow-up on the vegetarian white-tiger, Dali. I've also always felt, Jim has never gotten the proper attention he deserves. This novella, definitely does both of them justice. Dali displayed far more courage than I ever thought she was capable of. The novella, was very interesting and refreshing with tons of mystery. This novella, had a "feel good" theme to it and I whole-heartedly enjoyed it.5/5
2) Yasmin Galenorm "Ice Shards"
This novella, takes place in the Otherworld universe. I suggest you be up-to-date on the Otherworld series (Witchling, Changeling, Darkling, Dragon Wytch, Night Huntress, Demon Mistress, Bone Magic, Harvest Hunting and Blood Wyne) prior to reading this to avoid spoilers.
I stopped reading the Otherworld series after Demon Mistress for the reasons listed below. Everything just seemed to come too easily for the sisters. However, being three books behind in the series, I was able to follow along just fine. However, if you plan on reading this series, I suggest you do not start here.
I am really torn. I thoroughly enjoyed this novella's mystery and magical-action. Surprisingly, this novella made me nostalgic and long to catch-up to the sisters and see where their journey has led them. Below, I have listed exactly how I feel about each sister and there is lies my conflict.
Delilah- she's a ferocious kitten who dates a boring human jerk w/ a supernatural chip on his shoulders. Found it ridiculous that she thought spending an evening on her knees is a great way to spend an evening with her man. If she was so ferocious, he should've been concerned about spending his time on his knees for her.
Menolly - She was my favorite until Demon Mistress. I totally lost respect for her. I thought she was a HVIC (Head Vampires In Charge) but instead she becomes disappointingly soft about some no-name dude, spreads her legs and forgets about the mission. And the sex was so bad, it wasn't even worth a footnote, much less pages.
Camille - Is a blow-up doll with three air sticks at the ready to all poke her at the same time whenever her common-sense starts to arise.
This author is very talented. There are plenty of good things about this series that would be perfect, if only she didn't write in the sisters to behave like a sick version of Charmed vs sex kittens.....but she does write them in that way. I'm considering the notion of looking past the contempt I have for the sisters' behavior and just stick to the story/journey. I'm not sure if I can actually accomplish this but I've decided to give it a try.
Sometime soon, I will checking "Bone Magic" from the library and picking up where I left off. I enjoyed this novella more than I thought I would, considering how disgusted I became of the series. Well....here goes nothing.4/5
3) Allyson James - "Double Hexed"
I haven't read anything from this author before and I was able to keep pace with the story and understand who all the players were.
This novella takes place in author's Stormwalker series world. I haven't read this series prior to reading this novella. The short story really impressed me and changed my mind about purposely overlooking this series. The series synopsis makes it sound like this was going to be some huge romance with only a little action. If this novella is correctly portrayed and indicative of the series, than I'm going to love the series. This novella was fast paced, interesting, creative with lots of magical-action. 5/5
4) Jeanne C. Stein "Blood Debt"
I don't read Jeanne's Anna Strong series and I'm not really sure why. It's one of those series that always seem to have a huge following with great reviews but I've never felt the urge to see what it's all about. I really enjoyed it this novella, however, after reading this I still don't feel the pull to read the Anna Strong series. Not really sure what it is. The heroine was tough and combative, just the way I like em. I did love the notion of the separate universe, TBH, I wish the author would've spent more time on that, then the preternaturals. 4.5/5
This anthology was pure entertainment and I highly recommend it to fellow dark urban fantasy readers.
I also recommend
